Birds #7 (2026)

It is unequivocally the Year of the Wood Thrush and the Year of the Scarlet Tanager at our house. Quite possibly the Year of the Purple Finch as well. What a joy. This morning both a house wren and an eastern phoebe decided to sing into our chimney, amplifying themselves for my startlement and delight.

Went birding yesterday morning in the Grasslands:

Common yellowthroat, ovenbird, chestnut-sided warbler, black-and-white warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, blue-winged warbler, American redstart, yellow warbler, Nashville warbler, veery, American robin, eastern bluebird, song sparrow, eastern towhee, field sparrow, red-winged blackbird, Baltimore oriole, warbling vireo, red-eyed vireo, American goldfinch, indigo bunting, northern cardinal, house wren, marsh wren, American crow, common raven, mourning dove, gray catbird, tree swallow, barn swallow, cedar waxwing, alder flycatcher, willow flycatcher, least flycatcher, eastern phoebe, eastern kingbird, black-capped chickadee, black-billed cuckoo, blue jay, Canada goose, mallard, bobolink, European starling, turkey vulture, and a hawk (possibly rough-legged).
