Birds #5 (2020)

I heard the first phoebes of the year three days ago, so that would be April 3. Over the weekend a song sparrow was skulking around the edges of the lawn, and I thought I heard the stuttering drill of a yellow-bellied woodpecker. Also saw a house finch at the feeder on April 4, which is a rarity for us, though now that I’m home every day all day during the pandemic, I’m sure there will be lots I’d otherwise miss. Apparently according to radar a lot of birds should be returning in a wave early this week. If past years are any indication, we should hear a hermit thrush in the woods soon, just once, before it moves on to a breeding site elsewhere.
